It's never too late

Silver Sneakers classes provide local senior citizens the opportunity to stay fit by using simple workout equipment, normal household items and upbeat music to create a vibrant exercising environment at Firehouse Gym.


A typical session involves 45-60 minutes of intervals that include jogging in place and utilizing the resistance of dumbbells and elastic bands to stretch and keep different parts of the body in motion. The movements create a unique blend of cardio and strength training.


The program also includes the use of specially-designed plastic balls and free weights to reach and extend the arms and legs to simulate activities of daily living, such as grabbing something from a high shelf or putting groceries up.


“It just feels good for seniors to be active,” Silver Sneakers instructor and personal trainer Kathrina Colston said. “It’s imperative to work out at this age, and this is a really easy way to do it.”


Chairs are provided by the class as well, which provides support and stability. There aren’t many limitations that could prevent a senior from participating. The content of the class is often split between intervals of standing and sitting.


Classes range anywhere from 15-30 seniors, with the program growing so rapidly more sessions had to be created.


“It’s really great because everybody in the class progresses at a different pace,” Colston said. “You have people in the class that can’t stand or even raise their arms, but I know everybody gets something out of it.”


The exercises themselves don’t form a complex routine, but they are effective in increasing flexibility and maintaining balance. Both are important when combating conditions such as arthritis and preventing dangerous falls.


The cardio provided by Silver Sneakers is also useful in the prevention and the relief of a variety of diseases, including diabetes and various cancers. The exercise is also beneficial to the brain, helping to fight off complications associated with dementia.


“I’ve seen people well into their 60’s and 70’s regain their balance and increase their strength, while improving their overall health,” Colston said.

According to Colston, the social aspect of Silvers Sneakers may be just as important as the physical.


“For some people in the class, the highlight of their week is to be able to come and talk to the friends they have made in this program,” Colston said. “They just enjoy each other’s company.”


Theresa Ronig, a member of the program for the last two years, has made long-lasting relationships in Silver Sneakers.


“I started out just trying to get healthier and I actually went down two sizes,” Ronig said. “But now the main reason I go is to just spend some time and have some fun with my friends.”


The group also celebrates holidays together, even dressing up for St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween. The seniors have recently been involved with more local events, such as walking Calhoun Homecoming parade.


Whether a senior aims to remain limber, build muscle or lose weight; Silver Sneakers is a great fit for anyone over the age of 60 looking to become more active.
